Chapter Twelve

Bridget Schmidt smiled when the transport van came to a screeching halt, and she heard gunfire. It was about time the incompetent comrades came to set her free. She’d had to activate emergency procedures when they had caught the idiots with their pants down. That left only one more person with significant influence that she could depend on to carry out her primary mission. She had a theory about who was responsible for the leaked tapes, which did not please her. The mysterious Organization had been fucking up her own group’s plans for years. That had to stop. Bridget suspected they had somehow placed a tracking device on her. Hopefully, that would play right into her plans to get rid of those pesky women once and for all. She wondered why they hadn’t sent an assassin after her. Capturing her was merely a delay in the mission, not a permanent solution. Besides, the comrades had embedded more agents into America’s fabric, ready and waiting for activation. Each one was hand selected to integrate seamlessly into society.

Although Karl Junior’s plan hadn’t worked and was contrary to what they had instructed her to do, it now might be their only option. The blasted woman was even more popular after the failed attempt on her life. They couldn’t chance her announcing her candidacy. They needed a permanent solution for Governor Sandra Murphy.

Bridget calmly waited while the two agents assigned to the back of the vehicle pulled their guns from their holsters, readying themselves to engage. Bridget hoped they had sent the A team; otherwise, things could get messy, and she hated messy.

The back door flew open, and the overwhelming force was no match for the two remaining agents. Although one agent managed to get off a few rounds, it wasn’t enough to stop Bridget’s comrades.

“Have you prepared the bunker for unwelcome guests?” Bridget crawled from the back of the van, pushing aside one agent lying in her path. She lifted her arms, presenting her handcuffs, and one of her men searched for the key.

“We’re ready,” the man answered, then slipped the key into the lock to undo the handcuffs.

Bridget shook her hands. “We better be. These women are very proficient. I am eager to avenge Mikhail’s death. What about our other target? Does she still have around-the-clock security?”

The lead man grinned. “No, after your capture, she sent them packing.”

“So, business as usual?” Bridget walked alongside the leader of the strike team.

“Not exactly. The governor took a last-minute flight to New York.” Opening the door to a black SUV, he gestured for Bridget to climb inside.

Bridget secured her seat belt and looked at the leader. “Hmm, that is an odd twist. Why?”

Shutting the door and crawling into the driver’s seat, he turned his head and answered, “Unknown, but she met up with the reporter who broke the story on our allies in the American government. She and the reporter are staying at the Four Seasons.”

Another man slid into the passenger’s seat, and four others quickly climbed into the second vehicle.
